November marks five years since Florida voters overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment that called for reinstating a cheap cigarettes education and use prevention program. The Florida Department of Health’s (DOH) program, cigarettes Free Florida (TFF), is a comprehensive effort to reduce buy cigarettes use in the state.
Now is the time to look back at TFF’s accomplishments and the efforts that are saving lives and saving taxpayers millions of dollars. November is also a time to educate Floridians about the challenges of cigarettes online use and the devastating health consequences, including lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These health observances provide more awareness to the issues and encourage cheap cigarette online users to quit and to provide them with information on the resources available to them in Florida.

Fifth Anniversary of the Passing of the Amendment
On November 7, 2006, Florida’s voters overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment, Article X, Section 27, that called for reinstating a buy cigarette online education and use prevention program using 15 percent of the state's annual discount cigarettes settlement funds.
Progress to highlight:
o From 2007 to 2010, the smoking cigarettes rate for adults in Florida decreased by 18.6 percent, resulting in nearly 500,000 fewer Floridian adult smokers.[i]
o Decreases in smokers resulted in an estimated savings of as much as $4.2 billion in personal health care expenditures.[ii]
o As a result of the amendment, Florida is a leader in proving comprehensive cigarettes for sale prevention and cessation services to its residents.
The Great American Smokeout
November 17 is the 36th annual Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. This event encourages smokers to commit to being cigarettes-free for 24 hours and/ to use the day to make a plan to quit.
Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Governor Rick Scott has declared November Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the Florida. More people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers – combined.[iii] People who smoke cigarettes are 10 to 20 times more likely to get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke.[iv] Smoking causes 80 to 90 percent of lung cancer cases.[v]
National COPD Awareness Month
November is COPD Awareness Month, sponsored by the US COPD Coalition. COPD is now the third leading cause of death in U.S., killing more than 120,000 Americans each year.[vi] Cigarette smoking cigarettes accounts for about 85 to 90 percent of all COPD cases.[vii]
